Have You Watched These World-Famous TV Shows?
Breaking Bad

The tale of Walter White, a chemistry teacher at a high school who was diagnosed with cancer, becoming “Heisenberg,” a meth producer and drug lord, made for engrossing television. Thanks to its excellent writing, directing, and, of course, the performances of its cast, most notably Bryan Cranston as Walter White and Aaron Paul as his former student-turned-drug collaborator Jesse Pinkman, the Vince Gilligan-created series probably has no truly terrible episodes.
The decade-long fixation with antiheroes on American television, which started with The Sopranos, peaked with the release of Breaking Bad. The show got better as Walter got worse, did more heinous things, and his family suffered more catastrophic consequences. Since then, Better Call Saul has emerged as a successful spinoff of a different genre from Breaking Bad.
The Original Series

This Gene Roddenberry production, which is the most significant and influential science fiction TV series ever made, was never a rating powerhouse during its first 1960s run (it was terminated after only three seasons), but it gained new life and followers when it went into syndication. Following the success of Star Wars, within ten years of its cancellation, Star Trek made the transition to feature films, establishing a franchise with a presence on both the big and small screens.
While the Enterprise’s quest to discover new worlds and new civilizations was undoubtedly entertaining, it was Roddenberry’s optimistic outlook on humanity’s future and his social consciousness — from the diversity of its cast to its discussion of contemporary hot topics — that made Star Trek significant, courageous, and ultimately timeless. It also undoubtedly helped that the characters in Trek were so meticulously created by actors who had undeniable chemistry with one another.
The Wire

The Wire, a 2002 HBO series, appears to be your typical police drama on the surface. On closer inspection, the program appears to be a study of the criminal justice system or a persistent attack on the War on Drugs. The Wire actually takes a close look at one American city, especially Baltimore, Maryland. The series was renowned for its hard views of municipal bureaucracy and grim realism.
It was created by author and former Baltimore journalist David Simon and written by renowned authors like Richard Price (Clockers) and Dennis Lehane (Gone Baby, Gone). An extremely talented, but not always well-known cast, which occasionally featured former police officers and drug dealers, contributed to the show’s authenticity.
For 60 episodes of The Wire, the cast gave performances so sincere you would not have known they were actors, bringing characters like Detective Jimmy McNulty (Dominic West), Omar Little (Michael K. Williams), “Kima” Greggs (Sonja Sohn), and Stringer Bell (Idris Elba) to life. In contrast to most shows, where anyone could disappear at any time, this one was willing to murder key characters to advance the plot. The show’s realism made it possible to examine social, political, and educational topics without coming off as spectacular or exploitative. Unfortunately, many of the themes covered in the show are still relevant today, making it still interesting and relevant.
Very few TV series have ever been able to tell a tale this big and related in this way. The program began with the drug trade, quickly changed to union longshoremen, then went on to cover municipal politics, the educational system, and eventually print media. We chose The Wire as the best TV show of all time because it was able to bring television drama to the level of quality and complexity of a great book.
